“But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.”

Romans 4:5

When you approach God, He wants you to approach Him with boldness. He doesn’t want your sins to make you feel unworthy and make you frightened to approach Him. He wants you to approach Him with confidence, knowing that your justification and eligibility to receive from Him are based on the death, burial, and resurrection of His Son, Jesus.

This was the level of audacity displayed by the woman with the issue of blood when she touched Jesus. (Mark 5:25-34) She was aware that she was breaching a Levitical prohibition by touching Jesus, according to which anyone who has had a bodily discharge is unclean and should not enter a public place, let alone touch another person. (Leviticus 15) But she resisted her guilty feelings in the eyes of the law. She had heard about the goodness of Jesus, and she had faith that He would treat people with love and compassion, not judgment. She thought that if she trusted in Jesus, he would justify her and make her eligible for the miracle she required. She bravely pushed her way through the crowd to touch Jesus. Her action of faith gave her the miracle she wanted, and Jesus commended her by saying, “Daughter, your faith has made you well.” (Mark 5:34)

Another instance was when a man with leprosy came to Jesus asking for healing, knowing that it is against Jewish law for a leper to approach anybody. (Matthew 8:1-4) Jesus did not try to avoid him because of his leprosy; on the contrary, Jesus went ahead and touched him, breaking the Jewish rule for touching the “unclean” person. Jesus justified the man’s faith to come to Him and gave the leper his miracle – a whole new body free from leprosy!

What exactly about all of these people made them well? Faith that believes God justifies the ungodly, which is discussed in Romans 4:5. It will give you the courage to approach God even when you feel dirty because you just blew it. Today, when you decide to believe that Jesus is the justifier for the ungodly, you, who have been justified freely by His blood of the new covenant, will surely come boldly to the throne of grace with full confidence to receive what you have been asking for in your time of need.
