Don’t Figure It Out!
“Which of you by taking thought can add
one cubit unto his stature?”
Matthew 6:27
Have you ever considered that sometimes, after you pray for a miracle, your mind somehow comes into its own reasoning about how God would answer your prayer? And when He doesn’t answer the way you wanted to, you fall into a spiritual slump, thinking that God did not want to give you the miracle. Well, it is not that He doesn’t want to give you the miracle; is that He doesn’t intend to give it to you the way you wanted it to happen. Many times, we want to figure out how God would want to bless us financially, how He would want to heal our bodies, or plan out our future. The word thought here means to be anxious, to be troubled with cares, to care for, look out for (a thing), and to seek to promote one’s interests; caring or providing for. In other words, we cannot change anything if we try to figure things out ourselves. Didn’t God give us brains so we could figure things out ourselves, you might say? Well, of course, He wants us to use our minds to figure things out if those things are within the boundaries of our power to figure out. But when it comes to supernatural miracles and how they should occur, that is God’s territory to figure out, not ours. That is an area that we haven’t figured out! We just have to walk in faith and believe in faith and trust in faith, until God decides how that miracle should manifest itself. That is the part that we as human beings can’t seem to restrain ourselves from doing. We just want to be the smart ones in knowing that we could figure all of our problems out. If you were smart enough to figure out all the problems that you will ever face in your lifetime, then you wouldn’t need God in your life at all.
When I first got saved, I wanted God to change my father, who was a Buddhist. He was the last one in the family whom I wanted to receive Jesus. I have tried to talk with him for hours, trying to convince him to accept Jesus. But he never did. Then, when he had two heart attacks, all my family and I figured that it would wake him up to receive Jesus. But it didn’t. Then, when our house caught on fire and burned all his idols down, we thought he would finally repent. Instead, after our house was rebuilt anew, my dad went to Chinatown and bought two more idols and brought them back into the house. We almost gave up on him. But God encouraged us to keep on praying and believing that He would do it somehow. Years passed by, and I moved to Las Vegas, where I met my wife. Then, out of the blue, my brother called me and testified that my father had started going to church. At first, I could hardly believe it. But later on, I found out that it was my father’s own choice to go to church and no one else had persuaded him, Then I realized that it was the grace of God alone that brought my dad back to Himself. It was the greatest news I had ever heard, and all my family rejoiced for this miracle that took 45 years to come to pass.
So, if you have prayed to God for a miracle, don’t be dismayed when it doesn’t happen immediately the way you wanted it to. Stay faithful in your prayer and your faith confession, and then leave it to God to figure out the details of how He should accomplish it. I guarantee you that He would do it in His own perfect time when you stop trying to figure it out. This is so that when the miracle happens, it is God alone you would praise and give the glory to.
