“Then he got in the boat, his disciples with him. The next thing they knew, they were in a severe storm. Waves were crashing into the boat—and he was sound asleep!”

Matthew 8:23-25 (The Message)

Life can indeed be overwhelming at times, and it can also be unpredictable. You may have started the day singing, but after a few hours at work, you are coming home mad to the bone. You could have gone to the doctor for a basic check-up and come to find out you are diagnosed with a terminal disease. You could be driving to the grocery store, and someone has chosen your car to get into an accident with. As you are going about your day, you receive a phone call that you dread hearing about your children or loved ones. You woke up in the morning expecting good things to happen, then you see on television that the whole world market is tanking, including your portfolio. What do you do when negative things suddenly pop their ugly head into your life when you least expect it? How would you respond to that?

In times of uncertainty, we can be so easily caught up in all the things coming against us that we forget that we have Jesus in the boat of our life, who is at rest. After a long day and seeing how Jesus had cleansed the leper, healed the sick, and cast out demons, the disciples were excited to cross the sea with Jesus. However, their enthusiasm to get to the other side was short-lived when they came against a severe storm. As we see, no matter how experienced some of them were as fisherman and who have lived most of their lives near a body of water, you would think they could handle the rough weather. But obviously, there are times when not even our strength or abilities to figure things out can save us against the severe storm of life when it suddenly hits us. These storms can overwhelm us, increase our fears, and take us under. Fortunately, the disciples remembered they had Jesus in the boat with them and decided to call or scream for help. If you notice that the sound of the storm did not awaken Jesus, but the cries of His disciples did. After the disciples awakened Him, Jesus, the miracle worker that He is, immediately calmed the storm with His command.

Be assured, my friend, that no matter how severe the storm in your life may be, you have Jesus with you in your boat to calm the craziest storm. Take time to consult with Him through His word and surround yourself with faith-praying Christians who can support you through the storm that you are facing right now. As you meditate upon the word of God, it will give you rest and peace for your soul. You can believe that God has already sent out your miracle, resolved your problems, and restored you to your God-given destiny. Jesus in human form can get physically tired and require rest. Now that He has risen from the dead and sat at the right hand of God on your behalf, you can rest in Him who never slumbers. He will cause all things to work together for your good in the end. His perfect love for you will give you rest in your storm and victory over every challenge.
