A Step Ahead
“And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you.”
Deuteronomy 31:8
There will be moments in life when you feel unsure about what is going to happen in your future. Especially when you may have recently lost a job, a business you poured your heart and soul into, and even a loved one. Your insecurity about the future can lead to a flood of fearful thoughts surging through your mind. You may have questions like, How am I going to survive? What will happen to me and my family now? How am I going to make it? Don’t let negative thoughts direct your future, because they will only lead you to emotional despair and depression. It’s easy to let fear take the wheel during seasons like this. But here’s the truth—fear is not your guide, and it’s certainly not your future. God is. And He’s already one step ahead of you.
When life throws us into chaos, the temptation is to try to control the outcome or get lost in our own thoughts. But in these moments, the best thing you can do is breathe… and surrender. Give everything—your loss, your fear, your confusion—to the Lord. He’s not just watching from afar; He is going before you, preparing the way even when you can’t see it yet. Your loss is not the end of your journey. God knows the pain you are going through, and He has already prepared your path to restoration and wholeness. Think of Naomi and Ruth. Naomi lost her husband and her two sons. She was heartbroken and bitter, ready to give up on life. But Ruth, her daughter-in-law, chose to stay with her. She said these powerful words: “Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, And there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.” (Ruth 1:16-17) Neither of them knew what was waiting for them in Bethlehem. But God did. He was already a step ahead. Ruth, a foreign woman with no guarantee of the future, was led into a new life filled with redemption. Ruth was redeemed by a wealthy man named Boaz, a kinsman of Naomi. Ruth became his wife and bore a son named Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of (King) David. (Ruth 4:17)
In your tragedy, loss, and pain, Jesus is your mighty Shepherd who goes before you to prepare a place for you. It is a place where He will make you lie down in green pastures, a place of rest for your soul. He will lead you beside still waters to quench your life of dryness. He will restore your soul and lead you in the path of His righteousness, which He had already given you when you surrendered your life to Him. Though you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, Jesus is with you to comfort you and guide you by His word. You shall fear no evil, for His perfect love protects you. He has prepared a table for you in the presence of your enemies, who thought that your death valley was the end of you. But it is not. He will anoint you with fresh oil until your cup runs over. Surely His goodness and mercy will follow you all the days of your life, and you will dwell in the house of the Lord, where all your needs are continually met, forever. He has a future already prepared for you —a future full of healing, new beginnings, and hope. Trust Him. He’s already a step ahead.
